SUMMARY
Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan are starting to turn green. Mother nature has not caused this problem. We have. And we need to solve it. In 1847, the Dutch settlers drained 85% of the wetlands. The wetlands were used as a natural drainage ditches, or filters for sediment.
People are cleaning it up by restoring natural wetlands. They also have been providing ways for farmers to keep their soil. They have shown the farmers how to cover crop and create natural buffer strips. See more on the solutions page.
